Best Practices for Running a Successful Board Meeting

A successful board meeting is a blend of preparation, planning and execution. Board meetings can take a significant amount of time, yet they are crucial to the success of a business. In order to maximize board interaction companies must implement best practices that enable effective decision-making.

Start and End on Time

It’s no secret that many board meetings start late and can last longer than they should. Meetings must begin and end on schedule to avoid fatigue.

Establish Priorities for the Meeting

It is common for board members to be lost in board meetings due to new discussion topics that can consume valuable meeting time. To cut down on this, prioritise two crucial issues to be discussed and limit each discussion to 30 minutes. This will keep the meeting focused and productive.

Distribute the Board Pack to Directors in advance

By preparing the agenda and materials for the meeting ahead of time members can prepare themselves and arrive in time for the meeting.

Review Your Meetings

A few times each year Each year, hand each member of the board with sticky notes at the end of the meeting and ask them to write an “+” to indicate what’s working well and a “-” for what they think could be improved. This will provide leadership with honest feedback and will lead to better board meetings going forward.
